The relationship between Kraken and Nado is easy to overstate if you only read the slogan. Nado describes itself as a central limit order book DEX built on Ink, and its own docs say it is backed by the team that brought you Kraken. Kraken, separately, describes Ink as Kraken’s Layer 2 chain, built on Optimism’s Superchain. Nado docs Kraken’s Ink announcement
So the short version is this: Nado belongs to the Kraken and Ink orbit, but it is not the same product as the centralized Kraken exchange. Kraken.com is the exchange where verified clients trade through Kraken’s order books, account system and custody setup. Nado is an onchain trading venue, built for spot, perpetuals and margin-style trading through a DEX model.
That distinction matters. On Kraken, the experience is familiar CeFi: account login, balances inside the exchange, fiat rails where supported, and customer support tied to the centralized platform. On Nado, the pitch is different. It is built around self-custody, a CLOB-style interface, unified margin and DeFi access on Ink. You keep more direct control of assets, but you also take on onchain risks that do not feel the same as using a centralized exchange.
Ink is the bridge between the two stories. Kraken launched Ink as an Ethereum Layer 2 built on the OP Stack, designed for lower fees and faster confirmations. Kraken’s own support page lists one-second transaction time and average gas below 0.000001 ETH for Ink. Nado builds on that environment and tries to give traders something closer to a pro exchange interface without leaving the onchain world. Kraken Ink support guide
The clean way to think about it is not “Nado is Kraken Pro onchain.” That would be too neat. It is more accurate to say Nado is an Ink-native DEX with Kraken ecosystem DNA. It borrows credibility from the Kraken and Ink teams, but the trading model, custody model and risk profile are different.
For traders, that difference is the whole point. If you want regulated account access, fiat ramps and the simpler support path, Kraken remains the obvious place to start. If you already understand wallets, bridges, gas, liquidation risk and smart-contract exposure, Nado is the more experimental venue. The names are connected. The user responsibility is not the same.
