Kraken Desktop Smart Grid supports backtests and live edits

Kraken introduced Smart Grid on September 9, 2026. The grid trading tool is available to eligible Kraken Pro users through Kraken Desktop and is not currently described as a web or mobile feature.

A grid strategy places a series of buy and sell orders between an upper and lower price. The aim is to trade repeated movement inside that range. It is designed for sideways or choppy markets, not for predicting where an asset will go next.

Smart Grid lets traders choose an eligible trading pair, investment size, upper and lower price limits, number of grid levels and the spacing between those levels. A completed configuration can be saved, reused and adjusted later.

Kraken has also added historical backtesting. Before placing a live order, a trader can run the selected configuration against earlier price data. This shows how that setup would have behaved during the tested period, but it does not predict future performance. A range that worked with recent historical prices can still fail when market conditions change.

The ability to edit a running grid is one of the more practical parts of the release. Traders can reopen the configuration panel, change the settings and apply the update to the same grid without stopping it and rebuilding the strategy from the beginning.

Other controls include a base stop loss for the overall strategy, an option to enable or disable margin and live performance tracking. Kraken notes that margin availability and stop loss behavior can vary by account type and region.

Smart Grid runs natively in Kraken Desktop. Kraken positions this as an alternative to running an automated strategy inside a browser tab. Users still need the desktop application, an eligible Kraken Pro account and access to the relevant trading pair.

The tool automates order placement, not market judgment. A grid can continue buying as price moves lower or selling as price moves higher within its configured range. If the market develops a sustained trend and leaves that range, the assumptions behind the setup may no longer hold.

Backtesting, a stop loss and live amendments give traders more control over the process, but none of them turns grid trading into passive income or guarantees a profit. Kraken's own announcement says the strategy still requires monitoring and judgment.

Smart Grid is most relevant to Kraken Desktop users who already understand range-based trading and want to configure, test and manage the strategy from one interface. Traders who do not have a clear price range or who expect a strong directional move may find that a grid is not suited to the market they are watching.
