Kraken has highlighted a third-party coverage arrangement for its Protected Strategies USDC vault. Deposits may qualify for up to $100,000 in USDC compensation per deposit address and coverage period if Firelight determines that a covered event caused a loss.
This is not insurance, deposit protection or a guarantee from Kraken. Sentora, the vault's independent curator, enrolled the vault in Firelight's onchain coverage program. Firelight is not affiliated with Kraken, and Kraken does not provide, arrange, recommend or guarantee the coverage.
Users do not need to opt in or submit a separate application. A deposit may be eligible while it remains in the Protected Strategies USDC vault, subject to Firelight's terms.
Firelight lists defined technical and economic failures as potentially covered events. Examples include smart contract exploits, oracle failures, governance exploits, bad debt, stablecoin depegging and redemption failures. If an event occurs, independent monitoring partners identify it and Firelight's Risk Consortium decides whether it qualifies. Any approved USDC compensation is then distributed onchain by Sentora.
The stated limit is $100,000 per deposit address for each coverage period. That is a ceiling, not a promised payout. Compensation is also limited by the vault's overall coverage limit and the funds available in Firelight's coverage pool, so an eligible payment may be smaller than the loss.
Kraken says there is no separate charge when depositing or withdrawing. The coverage cost is paid from the vault's yield to Firelight, so the displayed annual percentage yield for Protected Strategies USDC is already net of that cost. Firelight and Sentora set the fee, which may change from month to month.
Firelight's exclusions include market losses, changes in asset prices or the vault's APY, user mistakes such as sending funds to the wrong address, lost exported private keys, insider theft and regulatory action. The terms, limits and list of covered events may change, and Firelight or Sentora may alter, pause or end the arrangement.
The underlying product remains a DeFi vault. Kraken says eligible assets deposited into DeFi Earn can be converted into the vault's base asset, moved to an embedded wallet and subscribed to an onchain vault that supplies funds to lending protocols such as Aave. Rewards are variable, and users may lose some or all of their assets through smart contract, market or operational failures.
The new coverage can reduce the impact of certain defined failures, but it does not remove DeFi risk or protect every loss. Before depositing, users should check whether the vault is available in their jurisdiction, read the current Firelight terms and verify the coverage pool and limits shown at that time.
