Why Kraken and Kraken Pro give you different referral codes

Two apps, one account, two codes

Open the Kraken app and the Kraken Pro app on the same phone, look for your invite link in each, and you get two different codes. Nothing is broken. Kraken runs the referral program separately in each app, and each app generates its own link.

The account underneath is still one account, so balances, verification and funds do not split between them. Only the referral side is separate.

Where each code lives

In the Kraken app, tap the gift icon in the top right, then choose Invite friends. Kraken app referral program

In the Kraken Pro app, open the Account page and tap Invite friends next to Referrals. Kraken Pro app referrals

What decides which program you land in

Asked directly whether the codes cross over, Kraken support answered:

> Referral tracking is based on how your friend creates their Kraken account (using the referral link/code during sign-up), not which mobile app they install afterward. The Kraken app and Kraken Pro app both log into the same Kraken account.

The referral is attached while the account is being created. Support was explicit that it usually cannot be added afterward, so there is no repairing this once your friend already has an account.

The same agent then pulled back part of that certainty, and the caveat is worth keeping: no guarantee that a Kraken Pro code will always be recognised if the signup starts inside the Kraken app, because some signup paths never prompt for a code and track only through an invite link.

The honest version, then: attribution is decided at signup, and the thing that carries it reliably is the link rather than the bare code.

Where your friend trades does matter

Here is the part that surprised me. A second support agent answered the follow-up, and it points the other way from "the app afterward does not matter":

> Typically, if the referral was made for Kraken Pro, the trading and transaction should be made via Kraken Pro so that your referred person would qualify the referral conditions. If they did make it via Kraken, it may trigger them not to be eligible for the rewards.

Read together, the two answers are not in conflict. They describe different steps. Attribution is fixed at signup and does not care which app your friend opens later. Qualifying is a separate test, and there the app does appear to matter: a Pro referral expects the trades to happen in Pro.

Note the hedging in the original wording, typically and may. This is a support answer rather than published policy, and Kraken's own help page hedges the same way when it says qualifying trades depend on the referral plan you signed up for. Treat it as the safe assumption rather than a guarantee, and have your friend finish the trading requirement in the app the referral came from.

What the referrer gets

Both of Kraken's current support pages state the same referrer reward, a fixed $20 in your default currency. Kraken gives €20 worth of BTC, CA$20 of BTC and $20 USDG as examples of what that looks like by region. Both pages also say you and your friend receive the bonus.

That number has moved before. When Kraken announced in April 2025 that Pro was joining the referral program, the figure quoted was $50 USDG or the local equivalent in BTC. Read the support page for the current amount rather than trusting any blog post, this one included.

The conditions have the same shape

The referee has to be new to Kraken with no previous account. They get 30 days from account creation to complete the required actions, which involve funding the account and trading. The referrer is paid within 14 days of those conditions being met. Both people also need to live in the same country, or both in eligible EEA countries.

Country eligibility is not identical

The two support pages publish different country lists for referrers.

The Kraken app page lists eligible referrers as the USA excluding Maine and New York, plus Puerto Rico, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, France, Spain, Poland, Italy, Belgium and Ireland.

The Kraken Pro page lists the USA, Puerto Rico, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, France, Spain, Poland, Belgium and Ireland. Denmark is absent from it, and the Maine and New York exclusion is not stated.

A missing line on a help page is not proof of a rule. But if you are in Denmark, or in Maine or New York, read the page for the specific program before assuming your referrals qualify.

The invite caps are not the same either

Kraken Pro's invite screen states a cap of 50 friends. The Kraken app's referral section shows no equivalent limit. Support described the 50 figure as specific to that campaign and confirmed that, because the codes belong to different programs, the limits attached to them can differ too.

If you invite people at any volume, that difference matters more than the reward amount, which is currently the same on both sides.

How to actually do it

You cannot make the two codes match. Support was clear that they belong to different programs and are not meant to be interchangeable.

So choose the program first, then send its link. Generate an invite link in the app whose program you want instead of passing along the bare code. Have your friend open that link before creating anything, ideally in a browser, and complete registration through that flow. Once the account exists they can log into either app, and when it is time for the trading requirement, point them back to the app the referral came from.

The mistake to avoid is the one that cannot be undone: letting your friend create the account first and trying to attach a code to it afterward.
