The short version: an xStock is a token that tracks the price of a US-listed stock or ETF. Backed Finance issues them, the shares behind them sit with a prime broker in Switzerland, and the token itself lives on Solana as an SPL token. Kraken lists them for eligible clients outside the US.
The part people skip is what the token is legally. Holding AAPLx does not make you an Apple shareholder. You do not get voting rights, you do not appear on any register, and you have no claim on the company. What you have is economic exposure to the share price, backed 1:1 by shares the issuer holds. If you are comfortable with that trade, fine. If you assumed you were buying the stock itself, the product is not what you think it is.
Coverage has grown. The lineup started at around 60 tickers when Kraken added xStocks in mid-2025, mostly large-cap US names plus a handful of ETFs, and has since passed 100. Availability is the other constraint: eligible non-US clients in 110-plus countries can trade them, while the US, Canada, the UK and Australia are excluded. In the EEA there is a suitability questionnaire before access opens.
What makes the structure interesting is not the wrapper, it is the portability. Because the token is a standard SPL token, you can withdraw it to your own Solana wallet and use it in places a brokerage share cannot go. That is also where most of the added risk sits.
So who is this actually for? If you already have a normal brokerage account with good access to US markets, xStocks solve a problem you probably do not have. They make more sense if you are outside the US, hold crypto already, and want equity exposure without moving money into a separate broker relationship — or if you specifically want the token onchain.
One honest caveat. Tokenized equities are still young. The issuer sits between you and the underlying shares, liquidity is thinner than the real market, and the rules around these products are still being written in most jurisdictions. Treat it as a newer instrument with newer failure modes, not as a drop-in replacement for a share certificate.
