Comparing tokenized equities to a brokerage account usually turns into a values argument. It does not need to. The two products differ on a small number of measurable things.
| xStocks on Kraken | Traditional broker | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can open | Eligible non-US clients in 110+ countries; not US, Canada, UK, Australia | Depends entirely on your country and the broker |
| Entry cost | Market price plus a 1.0% spread; no trading fee with USD or USDG | Commission from zero to a few dollars, plus FX if you are buying US stocks in another currency |
| Minimum | Around $1, fractional | Often fractional now, but varies |
| Hours | 24/5, with ten tickers 24/7 on Kraken Pro | Regular session plus limited pre- and post-market |
| Shareholder rights | None | Yes, including voting |
| Dividends | Reinvested via rebasing, net of tax | Cash into your account |
| Portability | Withdraw to your own Solana wallet | Transfer between brokers, slowly |
| Protection | Issuer and platform risk; backing is 1:1 but not a compensation scheme | Often covered by a national investor compensation scheme |
Read down that table and the pattern is clear. The broker wins on rights, on protection, and usually on cost for buy-and-hold. The token wins on access, on hours, and on being able to leave the platform with your position intact.
Cost deserves a closer look because it is easy to get wrong in both directions. A 1.0% spread sounds cheap next to a bad FX conversion at a retail bank, and it is. It sounds expensive next to a commission-free broker in your own currency, and it is that too. The comparison only makes sense against your actual alternative, not against an idealised one.
So the practical question is not "are tokenized stocks good". It is: can you open a decent brokerage account with reasonable access to US markets from where you are, at a cost you accept? If yes, use it, and treat xStocks as a niche tool for onchain use cases. If no — and for a large share of the world the answer is still no — then a 1% spread and no voting rights is a fair price for exposure you otherwise could not get.
